The First Month of College

Well I have no class today and it’s raining too hard for me to go outside, so I guess that now is as good of a time as ever to talk about what I’ve been up to.

Last month I moved out of Fremont and into my dorm in Davis. The place is pretty nice and cozy, but can’t compare with the newer buildings DIRECTLY ACROSS FROM US. The people around here are all really nice, even if they do get a little crazy once in a while. If you ever want to come visit me I’m in room 213 of Malcolm hall.

Now as for attending class, this has to have been the biggest thing I had to adjust to. I have never had to wake up at different times on different days to attend class. Not only that but the fact that some classes were back to back and others were hours apart made me very confused for the first few weeks. Even today I have to look at my schedule to see when I have to go where. My two hardest classes are Chem2A and Math21A. They consume the majority of my study time, but it’s not as difficult as I would have thought it would be as they are more or less just refresher courses from high school. For example, I have not learned any new concepts in calculus, but rather got an expanded understanding of them from what I had learned last year. My other three classes are psychology, a freshman seminar, and a career discovery group. None of these classes are very difficult and only require me to listen to the teacher’s lecture to understand the concepts. However, I will have to write a paper for my freshman seminar class, even though nobody has a clue as to what exactly we have to do.

In about a week from now will be time to register for the winter quarter. Even though it’s barely halfway past my first quarter, I will have to struggle to find another schedule of classes for me to take. Hopefully, I will be able to avoid the disaster which is my Wednesdays during which I have five classes lasting from 9:00AM to 10:00PM. Sadly, my assigned appointment time is fairly late in the schedule, so I might not be able to get all of the classes that I want during the first pass.

One of my side goals that I wanted to accomplish while I was here is that I wanted to be more open to people and make new friends. Although would not say that this has been a complete sucess, I am happy that I have met new people and made new friends. I know most of the people on my floor pretty well and have made friends in all of my classes.  Most importantly, I have not made any enemies, which is most fortunate of me.

As great as my first month of college has been, there are a few things which I would like to accomplish before the end of the year. Firstly, I would like to spend some time in some of the clubs on campus. Sitting in my dorm every day going online gets old pretty quickly. Secondly, I want to explore more of the Davis and see what the city has to offer. So far my experience here has been limited to most of the campus and a few blocks of downtown. If anyone would like to join me wandering around town I would be more than happy to have you follow along. Better yet, I’d greatly appreciate it if someone who already knows the town very well would give me a tour of the best places in town besides just the school. 🙂
